CFDA At Work for You: Recapping CFDA's April 2024 Committee Meetings

Every quarter, CFDA leaders meet in-person for committee and Board of Directors meetings, where they work to develop new member benefits, review the association's finances, plan its annual convention, and exchange ideas on how CFDA can best serve its members and funeral professionals across the state.

Below is a recap from CFDA's April 2024 Quarterly Committee and Board of Directors Meetings. If you have any questions, feedback, or would like to learn how to get more involved, please don't hesitate to reach out to the CFDA staff team at cfda@amgroup.us.

Convention Plans

The CFDA Convention Committee has been bustling with activity, developing memorable experiences for the upcoming 2024 and 2025 conventions. The 2024 convention promises many engaging activities including a "Summer Backyard Bash" with lawn games and beer pong, and a fresh twist at the President’s Banquet with a white resort wear theme instead of the traditional black attire. Key adjustments to the convention schedule have been made to better accommodate member needs and ensure a dynamic flow of events.

Looking further ahead, the 2025 convention will be held at the Signia by Hilton in San Jose, offering attendees the chance to explore technology and innovation at the nearby Tech Museum. Both years promise numerous opportunities for member engagement, volunteering, and sponsorship.

Legislative Insights and Challenges

The recent legislative committee meetings have seen pivotal discussions around the evolving fiscal landscape in California and its impact on funeral industry regulations. With a projected state deficit, potential fee increases and budgetary concerns are top of mind. The committee also reviewed legislative updates like AB 528 which could introduce pet burials in human cemeteries, reflecting shifting societal norms. Our Legislative Committee will also be focusing on EDRS in the coming months, drafting proposals how the system can be improved for better integration and efficiency to streamline operations for those who use it.

Financial Strategies for Stability and Growth

The Finance Committee reported a robust financial outlook, with strategic investment shifts and the introduction of a new credit card system, creating a new source of revenue for the association. These measures are designed to optimize CFDA’s financial resources, ensuring long-term sustainability and growth. The approval of the 2024-25 budget reflects a well-considered balance between expected revenues and expenditures, with an overall budgeted surplus.

Membership Engagement and Value

The Membership Committee is focusing on enhancing member engagement through innovative communication strategies and tailored member services. New initiatives like differentiating membership offerings and adjusting dues structures are being considered to ensure that all members find significant value in their CFDA member experience.

Professional Development and Training

Significant strides in professional development have been made, with the committee planning new training resources and virtual offerings tailored to meet the needs of today’s funeral professionals. Upcoming projects include removal etiquette training videos and the development of a new Cemetery Manager's Law Review course, emphasizing practical and accessible learning options for members.

Revitalizing Communication and Member Interaction

The Communications Committee is constantly reviewing and enhancing its approach to engaging members and improve information sharing. The committee continues to leverage digital tools and its social media platforms to amplify CFDA's message and highlight the work its doing on behalf of its members.

As we look forward to these developments and more, the CFDA remains committed to serving as a cornerstone for professional growth, networking, and community building within the funeral industry. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to enhance the convention experience and respond to the needs of our members across California.
