Prepaying for funeral can help SSI/MediCal
Applicants
To meet financial eligibility
requirements to qualify for public assistance, applicants must
show that they have limited assets or minimal resources that
can be converted to cash.
Currently, about 42% of those participating in California Master
Trust are establishing funeral trusts to help meet eligibility
requirements.
For help complying with the requirements, visit your California
Funeral Director Association member. The trust can be set up
immediately so the trust contract can be submitted with the application
for public assistance.
- MediCal only: There is no limit on the
amount of money placed in the trust for burial funds to pay
for funeral services, if the trust is Irrevocable. An individual
may place $1,500 in a Revocable trust for burial funds.
- SSI or both SSI and MediCal: The amount
set aside for burial space items (caskets, markers, etc.) is
unlimited. Individuals may place up to $1500 in a Revocable
trust for burial funds. California State laws permits SSI recipients
residing in California to have up to $1,800 in an Irrevocable
trust for burial funds.
