What are the requirements for being a funeral director?
An applicant must be 18 years of age; committed no crimes;
possess an AA degree (as of 7/01/99) and pass the funeral
directors test. (BPC 7619 and 7619.2)
What is an arrangement counselor?
Anyone who consults with a family of a deceased person for the purpose of arranging
for the disposition of human remains must demonstrate a knowledge of deferral
and state laws dealing with vital statistics, the coroner, anatomical gifts,
and those pertaining to the duties of a funeral director. The funeral
director must have an outline of the training and documented evidence of
the training time, place, and participants. Licensed funeral directors
are exempt because they have passed the funeral directors exam. (BPC

Does a director/embalmer need license in hand before performing
job functions?
No. As long as there is a license number, the director/embalmer
is licensed.
What are the requirements for posting one's funeral director
(e.g., FDR 1234) and funeral establishment number (e.g., FD
1234)?
You must post these numbers on all publications, advertisements, and promotional
materials. The license must be conspicuously placed in establishment. (CCR
1204 [d] and CCR 1211 [a])
Is continuing education required in your state?
No. This requirement was repealed in 1999. (AB 1379)
What is the fee to take Funeral Director's state licensing
exam?
$100.00 (DCA)
What is the Funeral Director's license renewal fee?
$200.00 per year. (DCA)
Is funeral home licensed?
Yes. (BPC 7616)
