Embalmers

What are the requirements for being an embalmer?
An applicant must:

  • Be 18 years of age (BPC 7640)
  • Have a high school education (BPC 7643)
  • Take the required embalming course. Length of course depends on school - not less than 1 year (BPC 7643)
  • 2 year apprenticeship (either before or after embalming school) under a licensed embalmer with at least 2 years experience in California (BPC 7643/7660, 7666)
  • Embalm 100 bodies (BPC 7643)
  • Pass the state embalmers test (BPC 7647)

What is the fee for taking the embalmers license exam?
Fee included in application cost of $206. (DCA)

What is the embalmers license renewal fee?
$100. (DCA)

Does the state accept the National Board embalmers exam?
No. (BPC 7641)

Is a Funeral Director license required for embalmers?
No.
